The party was founded in 1971 by a group belonging to the youth organization of Progressive Liberal Party. The party was inspired by the Black Panther Party in the United States. The Vanguard Party has failed to reach electoral success. In 1977, the party had put up five candidates, but could only muster 55 votes. In 1979, the party contested 18 seats, and won 173 votes.
