The legal issue of abortion in Iran has been the subject of much controversy for many years. Currently abortion is allowed in Iran in a limited scale, only in the event that the pregnancy threatens the life of the pregnant woman. Any other form of abortion is strictly illegal. However, there is widespread violation of the law[1]. In 1978 abortion was first legalized.[2] In April 2005, the Iranian Parliament approved a new bill easing the conditions by allowing for abortion in certain limited cases, such as if the pregnancy would result in the birth of a child with defects. However, the Council of Guardians, a 12-member clerical body which must approve new legislation passed by the Parliament, rejected the bill a month later.[3] [4][5] See also Abortion law Women's rights in Iran Women's rights movement in Iran References ^ Trends in abortion in Iran: 1994-2002 ^ Eliz Sanasarian The Women's Rights Movements in Iran, Praeger, New York: 1982, ISBN 0-03-059632-7. ^ Harrison, Frances.
