They hear shots. Flashback a few weeks before. Arthur is a high school student, bussing at a restaurant. Annie and her best friend Barb are waitresses there; Annie was Arthur's babysitter when he was a boy. She's now separated from her husband, Glenn, who's on the wagon, starting a new job, become a born-again Christian, and trying to prove he has his balance back so he can see more of their small daughter, Tara. Annie has an affair with Nate, who happens to be Barb's husband. Meanwhile, Arthur's parents have just separated, and he finds himself attracted to Lila, a new student at the high school. As with any small town, the film shows how people's lives cross with one another. After Tara wanders out of the house one day while Annie is sleeping, the whole town searches for her. She is eventually found by Arthur, though drowned in the frozen lake in the woods. Glenn has an emotional breakdown after the death of his daughter, and seeks "redemption" by murdering his estranged wife, Annie, then committing suicide.
