Jiří Menzel Jiří Menzel talks about his Closely Watched Trains (2007) Born 23 February 1938 (1938-02-23) (age 73) Prague Jiří Menzel (Czech pronunciation: [ˈjɪr̝iː ˈmɛntsl̩]) (born February 23, 1938, Prague) is a Czech film director, theatre director, actor, and screenwriter. His films often combine a humanistic view of the world with sarcasm and provocative cinematography. Some of these films are adapted from works by Czech writers such as Bohumil Hrabal and Vladislav Vančura. He became famous in 1967, when his first feature film Closely Watched Trains- a masterpiece[says who?] - (based on the novel by Hrabal) won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His controversial film Larks on a String was filmed in 1969, but was initially banned by the Czech government. It was finally released in 1990 after the fall of the Communist regime. The film won the Golden Bear at the 40th Berlin International Film Festival.[1] Menzel was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film again in 1986 with his dark comedy My Sweet Little Village. In 1987, he was a member of the jury at the 37th Berlin International Film Festival.[2] Contents 1 Filmography 2 TV series 3 Bibliography 4 References 5 External links Filmography Umřel nám pan Foerster (1963) Perličky na dně (1965) Zločin v dívčí škole (1965) Ostře sledované vlaky (Closely Observed Trains / Closely Watched Trains) (1966) Zločin v šantánu (1968) Rozmarné léto (Capricious Summer) (1968) Skřivánci na niti (Larks on a String) (1969) Kdo hledá zlaté dno (1974) Na samotě u lesa (1976) Báječní muži s klikou (1978) Postřižiny (Cutting It Short) (1980) Slavnosti sněženek (1983) Vesničko má středisková (My Sweet Little Village) (1985) Konec starých časů (End of Old Times) (1989) Žebrácká opera (Beggar's Opera) (1990) Život a neobyčejná dobrodružství vojáka Ivana Čonkina (Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin) (1994) "One Moment" (segment in the film Ten Minutes Older (2002) Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále (I Served the King of England) (2006) TV series Hospoda (The Pub) (1996).
