The victim had reportedly flung himself onto the train tracks and was suspected of committing suicide, aggravated by poverty. He had died with little more than ten dollars in his pocket. Train services towards Jurong East were disrupted. Upon hearing about the plight of the victim's family, the public donated money to the widow which amounted to more than S$500,000 by the fourth day of the wake.[1][2] This accident is also made unusually significant by the Wee Shu Min elitism scandal.
